Mimosa wood, also known as snakewood, is an exotic wood prized for its density and unique beauty, particularly in the manufacture of knife handles. Sourced mainly from the Amazon rainforest, this wood has characteristic patterns reminiscent of snake scales, ranging in colour from dark brown to red, with visible light veins, giving it a highly decorative appearance. Its high density and hardness, almost equivalent to that of steel, make it particularly resistant to wear and impact, making it an ideal choice for applications requiring a robust material. However, although this wood is very durable and resistant to moisture, it can be difficult to work with because of its hardness. It requires high-quality tools and special skills to achieve a fine finish. Mimosa wood therefore combines aesthetics and functionality, making it the material of choice for luxury knives, but it does require a certain amount of experience to work with.
