More about juniper wood
The smell of juniper wood is reminiscent of pepper. The shiny appearance brings out the natural beauty of the rings and veins of its roots.
This wood is not at all popular with lumberjacks, as it is very hard to cut, and its heartwood is virtually rot-proof.
It is also highly sought-after in woodturning for its pleasant fragrance and ring formations.
A little background history...
Also known as "Cade", juniper wood is highly prized for its medicinal virtues. In Antiquity and medieval times, it was very common to use juniper for fumigation purposes to disinfect homes and even the streets to keep out the plague and cholera. According to one legend, eating a juniper berry a day would keep illness away, while another claimed that the wood of the juniper had the power to chase away witches...
The ancient Greeks and Romans also used cade oil (obtained by heating juniper wood) for the ablution of their dead.
