But where does this passion for assembling woods of different colors come from? Marquetry finds its origins in ancient Egyptian times. Initially, it was an inlay technique used to decorate wooden objects. Egyptian artisans would carve into the wood to insert pieces of other materials such as bone, ivory, stone, or different types of wood.  

Fun fact: In the 16th century, an Italian master marquetry artist was challenged by a noble to create a picture entirely out of wood. He crafted a piece so flawless that the noble initially believed it to be a painted canvas.
