‘But where does this passion for assembling different coloured woods come from?

Marquetry has its origins in ancient Egypt. Originally, it was an inlay technique used to decorate wooden objects. Egyptian craftsmen would hollow out the wood to insert pieces of other materials such as bone, ivory, stone or different types of wood.

In the 16th century, an Italian master marker was challenged by a nobleman to create a painting entirely in wood. His work was so perfect that the nobleman thought he was looking at a painted picture!

Did you know? Marquetry is so delicate that each knife requires several hours of painstaking work to assemble the tiny pieces of wood.
