"The Rouennais, also known as the Queue de Vache, is an engraved pocket knife made at the end of the 19th century. It was the companion of peasants and farmers in Normandy, but was also used as a letter opener, thanks to its straight blade.
This traditional Norman knife has been around since 1850 and was produced until 1960. It was particularly appreciated by farmers for its excellent sharpness, making it an indispensable tool in their daily lives.
Did you know? The nickname ‘Queue de Vache’ (cow's tail) comes from its use to clean the tails of cows by farmers in Normandy and Picardy.
Traditionally, professionals, cowherds and farmers bought this knife at the Foire Saint-Romain, also known as the Foire du Pardon. This annual fair was an opportunity for cutlery makers to showcase their creations.
Today, the Rouennais knife is enjoying a revival. Craftsmen like Coutellerie Faget in Rouen are perpetuating this expertise by producing this emblematic knife by hand, in a variety of woods and horns".
