More about Birch Wood

Birch is a very light coloured wood with shades of beige and very pale pink. It makes a change from the much darker brown hues of most woods used for knife handles.

Birch trees are eternal travellers, never occupying the same spot for long because they can neither sprout nor grow and thrive in the shade of their peers.

The wind therefore does Mother Nature's work, disseminating their seed far and wide so the second generation will grow several kilometres from the first.

Such incorruptible wanderers do not take root or adopt a country beyond one generation.

Birch sap is made into wine in some countries of Northern Europe, Russia and North America. Birch sap is also known for its medicinal virtues. The oil distilled from its buds has diuretic properties and is soothing for certain skin conditions.
