Snakewood comes from the Guyanese forests.
No, it doesn’t attract snakes. It owes its unusual name to its highly textured, dark yellowish-orange fibre. It is sometimes marbled with large irregular vein-like markings in a dark brown streaked with darker veins, which look very much like the scales on snakeskin.
Snakewood is very dense and hard and considered a precious wood. The snakewood tree is extremely rare and grows exclusively in primary forests on poor soil. It is recognisable by its highly unusual, knobbly trunk.
Did you know?
Thiers is the name of a pocket knife design patented by the Couté de Tié Confrèrerie.
Its manufacture is governed by a guild modelled on the Confrèrerie of 1582, which oversaw the manufacture of cutlery in Thiers for nearly 3 centuries.
Inspectors from the guild are invited to check for compliance at each stage in the manufacture of the knife.
